Does the Machinery Guarding at Your Work Keep Your Team Safe?
Most people don't think much about machinery guards.
They're just... there.
Until one isn't.
It's easy to trust a machine that's been doing the same job for years without incident. A conveyor runs smoothly. A saw starts when it should. A PTO shaft spins exactly as expected.
The trouble is that machinery only needs one missing guard, one damaged component, or one missed check for things to go badly wrong.
A recent WorkSafe prosecution involving an unguarded PTO shaft serves as a sobering reminder of this. A worker suffered life-changing injuries after becoming entangled in machinery that should have been guarded. The risk had already been identified by the business, but the safeguard wasn't in place when it mattered.
While this incident occurred on a dairy farm, the lesson applies to any workplace that uses machinery.
Whether it's a workshop, factory, processing plant, construction site, or farm, safeguards only work when they are present, maintained, and used.
A Guard Is the Last Line of Defence
We often say health and safety is about more than ticking boxes.
That's true.
But when it comes to machinery guarding, there are some boxes that are worth taking the time to check.
A guard is often the last thing standing between a worker and a moving part that can cause serious harm.
Without it, people can be exposed to:
rotating shafts
belts and pulleys
chains and sprockets
rollers
cutting equipment
pinch points
crushing hazards
A missing guard doesn't always lead to an injury.
The problem is that when something does go wrong, the outcome can be devastating.
The lack of even one safety measure can mean the difference between a near miss and a serious injury.
Knowing the Risk Isn't Enough
One of the things that stands out about the WorkSafe case is that the hazard wasn't unknown.
The business had already recognised machinery entanglement as a high-risk activity.
There were rules in place.
There was a safety system.
The issue was that the safeguard wasn't actually there when the machinery was being used.
It's a valuable reminder that identifying a risk is only the first step.
The real challenge is making sure controls remain in place day after day, long after the procedure has been written and the conversation has been had.

a guard removed for maintenance and never replaced
a damaged component that nobody got around to fixing
a pre-start check completed without really checking
assumptions that someone else had already looked at it
Health and safety systems are important, but they only work when they're reflected in what happens on the ground.

What Should You Be Checking?
You don't need to wait for an incident to review machinery safeguards.
A few simple questions can go a long way:
Are guards fitted wherever they should be?
Are they damaged, worn, loose, or missing?
Are guarding checks included in pre-start inspections?
Are workers encouraged to report issues when they find them?
Are damaged guards repaired or replaced promptly?
Is someone verifying that checks are actually occurring?
These checks don't usually take long. But they can prevent consequences that last a lifetime.
Machinery Safety Is About More Than Compliance
It's easy to think of guarding as a compliance requirement.
In reality, it's one of the simplest and most effective ways to protect people from serious harm.
Most machinery incidents don't happen because someone deliberately took a risk.
They happen because a control failed.
A guard wasn't there. A check wasn't completed. A fault went unnoticed. A task that felt routine turned into something else.
That's why safeguarding deserves attention even when everything appears to be working as normal.
If a Guard Was Missing Today, Would Your System Catch It?
The safest workplaces aren't the ones that never experience equipment issues.
They're the ones that identify problems before someone gets hurt.
Take a moment to think about the machinery in your workplace.
If a guard was damaged, missing, or removed today:
Would somebody notice?
Would it be reported?
Would work stop until it was fixed?
Would your system pick it up before someone was harmed?
Those questions are often more revealing than any checklist.
Because when it comes to machinery safety, a guard is only a safeguard when it's actually there.
Effective health and safety is about more than having procedures. It's about making sure critical controls remain in place when they're needed most.
